In 1985 we realized that it was important to bring together all existing tour guides and drivers for the purpose of professionalizing them under the umbrella of Uganda Tourists Drivers - Guide Association.
In the year 2000 the increasing demands of tourists required more focused and specialized bird guides. A meeting was held to discuss the challenges ahead of the tourism Industry. The Uganda Bird Guides Club was formed with Johnnie Kamugisha elected the President.
As a new activity in the Industry for a number of times on our weekly birding excursions we were arrested and attacked by authorities and residents within some local communities. However, with time people have come to appreciate the benefits of Birding and Bird Conservation.
Within a few years of exsistence, With our strong partnership with Nature Uganda the Local Birdlife partner, over 20 Guides have been trained. Birding activities have also started in primary schools.
Bird trade is being checked by our big network of site guides associations. Three shoebills were rescued from hunters and two of them are now kept at the Uganda Wildlife Education Center at Entebbe,unfortunately one died due to an injury it had sustained when it was trapped
The Uganda Bird Guides Club Now chairs the newly formed African Bird Guides Trainers Association (ABGUTA) which was formed in South Africa during the Training of Trainers Course.
Uganda Bird Guides Club is Building its reputation both locally and internationaly sikmply because of professional services and high focus on bird conservation in the country. The well desingned birding Itineraries are an assurance of satisfaction of any visiting birders. The network of site bird guides is arguably the best in the region
We do appreciate all those who have donated birding equipment to our club. At least one member at every birding site now has a pair of binoculars.
Our regular attendance of the British Bird Watching Fair is bringing closer the real picture Uganda as a birding destination.
